Location tag
[edit]Hi there! I'm interested in knowing why you reverted the location added to File:Air Line Trail bridge over Ten Mile River, July 2022.jpg. My estimation from the map is that it's fairly close to the bridge's position, which the "object location" tag confirms. Thanks, Rkieferbaum (talk) 11:24, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Rkieferbaum: The camera coords aren't quite accurate - they place it on the trail, rather than on the corner of the abutment. I normally add {{Location}} manually for my own photos, since I can place it more accurately than the internal GPS in most devices. However, in this case I couldn't remember which side of the bridge I was on, so I just used {{Object location}} instead. Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:17, 7 August 2025 (UTC)
No signatures when adding notices
[edit]Hello, you don't seem to sign your notices on user talk pages, see your contributions, why is that? Jonteemil (talk) 09:48, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Jonteemil: That link only shows edits adding dab links, so you're just seeing my additions of {{Noalthist}} (before I fixed it) rather than all messages (which I do usually sign). That template is less an attempt to start a discussion and more a final warning before a block. I can start signing when I add it if you think that's best. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:46, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- Well, all other notices are signed so I don't see why these shouldn't be. Jonteemil (talk) 11:37, 11 August 2025 (UTC)
- Okay, will do. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:31, 11 August 2025 (UTC)

Can't edit on mobile internet anymore due to ranged IP block
[edit]Block #497972 (Special:Contributions/186.175.0.0/16) affected my IP address of my mobile device and now I can't edit pages due to this. Is there any way to get some sort of account exemption? SergioFLS (talk) 16:54, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
- @SergioFLS: I've added IP block exemption to your account for the duration of that rangeblock. Please make sure to follow the conditions there. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:49, 14 August 2025 (UTC)
Hello, this file, which you deleted, has been recreated by the uploader. Jonteemil (talk) 18:08, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Jonteemil: Thanks for the notice. I've deleted and blocked the spammer. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 18:15, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
Hi there. I was the uploader of this deleted file, a deepfake of a historic event; while I have no major complaint against its removal, I want to make clear that my 18 years of contributions to the global project (mostly on English Wikipedia) have been quite constructive (F10).---FarSouthNavy (talk) 01:14, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- @FarSouthNavy: You are correct that you have many productive contributions and F10 was not technically correct. However, it was out of scope, as are the vast majority of AI-generated images. I encourage you to upload real images rather than speculative works. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 04:41, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
- It's OK, my only concern was to make it clear that F10 was wrongly applied to this case. No problem concerning the file deletion; even if I uploaded dozens of copyright-free images to commons, I was unaware of COMMONS:SCOPE---

Question
[edit]Hi. Can you do me favor and block User:Lofa County since they appear to be an SPA account that's just here to vandalize deletion requests related to flags? Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:06, 5 September 2025 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!
[edit]
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2023 Picture of the Year contest.
Mime photo deletion request
[edit]Please explain your reasoning for attempting to remove my own work from the site. Lightmetro (talk) 22:56, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- @Lightmetro: The issue is that the United States does not have freedom of panorama for artworks. Although you took the photo, Commons cannot host it because it depicts a copyrighted artwork in the US. I understand it's a frustrating thing to deal with. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:05, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I guess I need to get busy deleting... Lightmetro (talk) 01:06, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I’ve removed my images from various articles that could have public artwork within them. For whatever reason, Wikimedia Commons wants me to re-login every time I refresh the page. Because of that I will take no effort to nominate those images for deletion. I don’t have near that much time on my hands. But they’ve been removed from various pages. I’ll leave the rest to you.
- Side note, the fact that American agencies place interesting works of art in public places like train stations and then attempt to keep people from sharing said photos is ENTIRELY on brand lol. Lightmetro (talk) 23:47, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- Here’s another one for you since you have all this time. That big “MAPLEWOOD” sign is a piece of public artwork. Get busy bud.
- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maplewood%E2%80%93Manchester_station Lightmetro (talk) 00:09, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- I've re-added a few where the artwork is de minimis; the Maplewood sign is also de minimis and doesn't need to be deleted. I've created Commons:Deletion requests/File:Garden Under the Bridge.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Nucleic Life Formation.jpg for the two where the artwork is the primary subject of the image.
- I agree that it's quite annoying; it's a less-than-ideal part of US copyright law (and not the fault of the transit agencies), but unfortunately one that Commons has to take seriously. Please understand that this isn't a slight against you or an attempt to erase your work; it's just the unfortunate reality of copyright law. In some cases, either the agency or the artist (depending on who the copyright was assigned to in their contract) are willing to allow use of a photograph under a Commons-compatible license.
- Many uses of photographs of copyrighted art will still fall under fair use exemptions (such as personal use like posting a photo on social media). For articles where there's a description of the artwork, it may be worthwhile uploading the images there, as English Wikipedia allows fair use images in articles. Fair use images cannot be hosted on Commons, which is why I've nominated those three files for deletion here. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:17, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- I would like to remove all my own work from the site. How do I go about doing that? I have no interest in participating any longer. Lightmetro (talk) 00:24, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- Take a few days to think before you quit the project. I know it can be frustrating to have a few images deleted, but that shouldn't scare you away from contributing. You have uploaded many other useful images that don't need to be deleted. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:37, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- It’s more just a culmination of different things. The images were just the last straw.
- Take the ridiculous light/semi/pre metro discussion on my own city’s light rail page and plenty of others. Basically a months long edit war that, to be fair, was finally recently rectified.
- I’m sick and tired of trying to do my part to update these pages (at least as far as my community goes) only to find out 2 months later, or more, that I broke a rule lol. It’s not worth it.
- If there is a way for me to remove my own personal work, please share. Lightmetro (talk) 01:13, 23 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to hear that, and I hope you decide to come back later. In general, Commons does not allow users to request deletion of their own works (except in the first week after uploading, as a courtesy), since Creative Commons licenses are irrevocable. File:BART map detail showing purple line.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
